Speight Marshall Francis served as Structural Engineer of Record and Agent 1 Special Inspector for this new 4-story, 43,467 bookstore and office building completed in 2008. The structure is a steel column and beam framed building with steel floor and roof joists. The enclosure is brick veneer on steel studs, precast concrete panels, prefinished metal siding, and aluminum-framed insulated glass storefront and curtainwall. A curved glass and precast entry pulls visitors into the building.
The first and second floors are home to the new Old Dominion University Bookstore, with part of the space catering to textbooks, clothing, school memorabilia and student supplies, while the remainder of the space sells books, magazines, and multimedia geared toward the public. Interior spaces include a two story atrium, lounge area, and a coffee house with outdoor seating. The third and fourth floors are accessible by a separate entrance and include bookstore support spaces and ODU offices. A fourth floor rooftop terrace offers views over the University Village.
The Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate (HRACRE) awarded the project the “Best Commercial/Retail Building under 100,000 sf” in 2008. BCOM project.
