Sited at the corner of Burbage Drive and Glenrose Drive in Suffolk, Colonel Fred Cherry Middle School’s multifunctional design serves students as well as community needs.

Speight Marshall Francis served as Structural Engineer of Record and Agent 1 Special Inspector for Suffolk Public Schools’ Colonel Fred Cherry Middle School which opened to students in 2018. The 125,000 sf, 750-student middle school’s design was based on prototype drawings our team previously developed for Page Middle School in Gloucester, VA. The new $31.7M school houses students in grades six through eight and is expandable to 800 students. Public spaces are easily accessible in the front of the building while the three different grade wings are located in the back. Naturally lit open interior spaces and outdoor multipurpose learning spaces are plentiful. The two-story structure consists of Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) and steel frame construction. Construction documents for this 21st Century learning facility were entirely produced using Revit® Building Information Management (BIM) software.
