Located just off Princess Anne Road, Kempsville Recreation Center originally opened in 1977 as Virginia Beach's first community recreation center. The new $32M state-of-the-art LEED Silver certified Kempsville Recreation Center opened with great anticipation in June 2017.
The City of Virginia Beach’s 87,116 sf single-level facility features a lap and leisure pool, outdoor spray ground, elevated walking track, two court gymnasium, fitness center, multi-purpose spaces, and a child care facility along with locker rooms and other support space. LEED Silver certified, the project includes a geothermal HVAC system.
In 2013, our firm also served on the team which analyzed the feasibility of modernizing Kempsville Recreation Center versus complete replacement whereas complete replacement was found to be most cost effective.
Received 2019 Virginia Beach Planning Commission Merit Award in the Sustainable Development Category, 2018 American Public Works Association (APWA) Mid Atlantic Chapter Project of the Year Award (for structures $25 million to $75 million), 2017 Best Recreation/Entertainment Project, Award of Excellence and Juror’s Choice Award from Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate, and Best New Facility (Bricks and Mortar) Population Greater than 100,000 SF from the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society.
